  1. A group of local languages/dialects which can trace their origins to southern Fujian province, China. In common parlance, Southern Min usually refers to Hokkien, which includes Amoy dialect, Taiwanese Hokkien and other varieties in Southeast Asia, as well as Teochew. It belongs to the Min Chinese dialect group of the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family.
