multidimensional array
Noun

multidimensional array (plural multidimensional arrays)

  1. (programming) A data structure consisting of a vector of vectors, in the case of a 2-dimensional array, or, in the case of an N-dimensional array, a vector of multidimensional arrays of degree N minus 1, thereby allowing the simulation of a N-dimensional grid of storage locations using an underlying memory architecture in which storage is addressed in a linear fashion.
  2. (programming) A data structure that has the semantics of an array of arrays, all of which may be indexed with values of any data type, usually with a supporting syntax built-into a programming language.
  3. (programming) Any abstraction, usually a memory-resident data structure, that addresses storage locations via an N-dimensional coordinate space.
