Etymology
Attested since the 1540s; Latin praestigiosus, praestigiae ("juggler's tricks"), possibly an alteration of praestringō ("to blindfold, to dazzle"), from prae- ("before") with stringō ("to bind or tie"); equivalent to prestige + -ous.
